Barbara van Ittersum Born 1968 in Amsterdam (NL), photographer Barbara van Ittersum studied at the University for the Arts in Utrecht (HKU). She has been working as a photographer since 1987 and has held many expositions as well as doing critically acclaimed work for magazines and outdoor advertising campaigns. The photographs "Posthuman Dolls" (2002) takes the form of a laboratory research project. Barbara van Ittersum uses Barbie's in her photographs as focal subjects, or as "beautiful objects" as idol-icon. Does Barbie establish, and is she responsible for idealistic and irrational goals for women, and do they, as dolls promote plastic surgery? Does it approach sophisticated genetic manipulation? Human cloning? Biotechnology? Factor X; all human quality interests and doll sizes. The photographs function as if in a state of experiment; issues of conventionality and "good taste" result in images of vanity and lust, cruelty and pride, fear and loneliness. Her pictures function as a mirror of social consciousness. The second series of abattoir photographs "Nice to Meat You" were shot for Reload Magazine (2000), the models came from the Paparazzi modeling agency Michanou and Jojanne.
